Lize & Christo

Varsity sweethearts, Lize and Christo wed in an idyllic country setting in the heart of the Riebeek Valley. Love, personal touches and strong family values fulfilled the day.

HERE COMES THE BRIDE…

Christo and I met on a blind date while at varsity. We became best friends and dated for 5 years. We even managed a year of long distance dating. I guess the saying is true, ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’, because a few months into this Christo surprised me with a beautiful and special proposal in Franschhoek. I did not expect a thing! He spoilt me with a spa day in Stellenbosch, then took me for chocolates and ice cream in Franschhoek. After this, he took me to a beautiful farm close to the mountains. As we were walking around the farm and taking pictures, Christo got on one knee and asked me if I will give him the great pleasure of becoming his wife. He even managed to capture the big question in a photo, which I will treasure forever.

We knew we wanted a more relaxed wedding with all our family and close friends, but most of all we wanted everybody to have fun and dance the night away. We got married at Groenrivier, just outside the picturesque town of Riebeek Wes. The venue is so beautiful and the staff very helpful.

My husband, family and friends assisted me with all the planning and supported me every step of the way, from sourcing venues to making thank you gifts.

THE BIG DAY

We got married in a small cellar at the venue with big wooden doors and a floor covered with fallen oak leaves. The ceremony was very special for us as Christo’s father married us and a dear friend lead the worship.

Our wedding photos were taken on the farm and in town and it gave us some time to take it all in and celebrate with each other. Our photographer did a great job capturing all the special moments.

Our ceremony was a lot of fun and our master of ceremonies ensured there were many laughable moments. Our wedding day had so many highlights: walking down the aisle with my father, seeing Christo waiting for me and having all my sisters and family there. However, the one highlight that stood out the most was Christo’s speech. It was so special and it brought tears to my eyes.

BEEN THERE DONE THAT

Remember, your wedding day is a celebration, so do not let small things upset you. I kept an excel sheet with all the details of the wedding and made sure everybody involved had a copy. This helped us relax on the day, as everyone knew what to do.

FINER DETAILS

Our colour scheme was natural, soft colours of pink, grey and nude with elements of wood and straw (my farm heritage creeping in). Family members contributed in various way, which helped make our wedding day extra special. My sisters, who live in Canada and Denmark made bunting for the foyer and the cake, as well as the seating chart which was done on doilies and presented on an old ladder provided by our wonderful flower and décor service provider, Carin. Wood slices from our farm were used as table décor and my grandmother crochet beautiful flowers for the napkins and ladies’ corsages. Christo’s mother (now my awesome mother in-law) made our wedding cake. As both Christo and I love Steri Stumpi’s we decided that all our guest would receive one as a thank you gift.

After various wedding dress expeditions, I decided to have my wedding dress made. My godmother, who designs and makes dresses, stepped in and made all my dreams come true. My dress was made with a lot of love and attention to detail.

Our first dance was to ‘Timbuktu’ by Riana Nel. We saw the words as very fitting and it suited our personalities.
