Real wedding: Chio & Gumby

Chio & Gumby

When a large wedding party feels like an intimate celebration of love and life, you get a beautifully personal, festive day like Chio Kraak and Robin Moulang’s (Gumby).

HERE COMES THE BRIDE…
Gumby and I have known each other for years as we both grew up in the Cape St Francis surfing community. He proposed in America when we were there for his best friend’s wedding. We all went on a ‘buddymoon’ and that’s when he got down on one knee.We wanted a fun evening of dancing – a big, relaxed party with good friends, great food and awesome music.First and foremost, we looked for a venue where we could host a weekend wedding with catering and accommodation on-site. We wanted to be close to the ocean and somewhere that allowed us to incorporate as much natural greenery as possible. Importantly, we wanted a place that held special meaning to us. Cape St Francis Resort ticked all our boxes.

THE BIG DAY
My mom, her good friend and wedding planner Cheryl Stedman, and the team at the resort did a lot of the organising. We had no specific seating plan, which encouraged everyone to mingle and enjoy the dance floor, food and atmosphere.

All the kids in the family were part of the ceremony – there were 12 in total, including our two sons, Jessie and Hoby. To show our closest family and friends our appreciation, we had a rehearsal dinner the night before, where we had amazing intimate speeches. The speeches on the day were also incredible, but much more light-hearted and fun. I also gave my bridesmaids jewellery from one of my favourite stores, Black Betty.

It was everything we dreamt our big day to be. The coming together of all our friends and family under one roof (or I should say tent) for an unforgettable evening of good music, food and dancing. The weather even played its part. The best of all was marrying my husband, of course.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT
Don’t sweat the small stuff; remember the bigger picture. The photographer is also very important as it’s a record of one of the best days of your life and you need someone who can really capture the moments.

THE FINER DETAILS
The food was continuous with a large meze station, a variety of canapés and flat breads brought around on wooden boards, as well as a late night burger station. We had a dessert table with an assortment of delicious treats, including dark chocolate brownies, fudge and mini cupcakes.

The decor was organic and natural with an Eastern influence. Everything was light and white and we used beautiful Bali treasures throughout. There were wooden knives and forks and a wedding cartoon designed by legendary J-Bay artist Stephen Bibb. The only flowers we had were white orchids in pots, which I gave out as thank-you gifts at the end.

My dress was a Gert van der Merwe creation made from French lace. I accessorised it with a headpiece, sandals and an upper-arm bracelet.

Music was one of the most important things for our night to be a success. We chose our favourite local artists and gave them a playlist of music we love. They came together as an amazing band.
