In love in the City of Lights

Known as one of the world’s most romantic cities, Paris is a lover’s dream. Offering luxurious hotels, incredible shopping and Century’s old art, Paris is altogether unmatched. Make sure you spend some time at one of these five places.

Versailles

1. Versailles

If you have enough time in Paris (five or more days), make this a day trip. Luxurious, over-the-top and ornately decorated, tour Louis XIV’s palace and magnificent gardens. Walk 45 minutes over to Marie Antoinette’s pastoral-perfect ‘hamlet’ – a recreation of a Norman farming village. She would head there to escape the extravagance of the court and embrace ‘country’ living.

The Orsay-L

2. Musée D’Orsay

If you’re a particular fan of the Impressionist movement, this is an absolute must do. Set in a former beaux arts train station, the D’Orsay is home to Monets, Manets, Renoirs, Toulouse-Lautrec and the list goes on. Head to the upper floor to see the most famous works, the middle level for a small but stunning collection of works by van Gogh and Gauguin’s depictions of Tahiti. The café upstairs is also perfect for a light lunch.

3. Sacré-Coeure and Montmarte

The SacréCoeur, consecrated in 1919, is one of the most iconic monuments in Paris. At the top of the Butte Montmarte, it has one of the most beautiful views of the city. Architected in a Roman-Byzantine style, the Sacré-Coeur is instantly recognisable for its white colour and ceiling decorated with the largest mosaic in France. Visit the monument (spot the scene where Amelie was shot), buy a baguette and Gorgonzola cheese and find a bench overlooking the capital – a picnic unlike you’ve experienced.
4. Au Printemps

This and Galeries Lafayette are Paris’s grandest department stores – floor upon floor of big-name designers as well as more affordable ready-to-wear fashion. Pop into the original location, on Boulevard Hausmann, for a bit of a honeymoon splurge.

Sainte-Chapelle

5. Sainte-Chapelle

Easily one of the city’s prettiest churches, the Sainte-Chapelle is a royal medieval Gothic chapel, located near the Palais de la Cité, on the Île de la Cité in the heart of Paris. It is breathtaking, with every inch of the remaining wall surface and the vault richly coloured and decorated in stained glass. It is in itself a work of art.
