White sand, champagne glasses raised to the sunset… it’s a familiar honeymoon picture, isn’t it? While reclining on a beach is a great way to reward yourself after all that wedding business, there are plenty of not-so-common experiences for two that you can enjoy. If you and your fiancé are more prone to adventure, why not try one of these unconventional honeymoon spots?

1 Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, Western Cape

unconventional honeymoon spots

There’s a lot to get up to at the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, including getting married. If, after your nuptials, you’re not all that keen to put your feet up just yet, then you might like to consider the Sanbona Explorer Camp. It offers an authentic two-day hiking experience through the nature reserve. This means a lot of walking, but since it’s through the lush South African wilderness, which promises sightings of various members of the Big Five, we don’t think you should complain. Plus, the camp itself includes luxury tents. Read about our editor’s experience of the Sanbona Explorer Camp to find out more.

4 Kakslauttanen Resort, Finland

Ever slept in a log cabin? Okay, we’re guessing the answer’s yes. But have you ever slept in a glass igloo? Yeah, we thought not. Both types of accommodation are available at Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort. If you choose the first, make sure you’ve checked out their Chalets, Queen Suites and Wedding Chamber for a log-cabin experience that’s definitely a little different from the usual fare. If you opt for an igloo, try to book for between late August and end of April. During this period, you’ll be able to lay down and gaze at one of the world’s most spectacular natural phenomena, the Northern Lights.
