Your ultimate wedding planning checklist

It’s wedding time – and you have no idea where to begin… Setting out a wedding planning checklist with easy steps is the way to go, and luckily for you, we’ve already done that part! Get to planning with this 10-step guide for getting all your ducks in a row before the big day.

STEP 1 – JOURNALLING

Get your hands on a great wedding journal or notebook to write down all your thoughts, ideas and plans for your big day. This can also be your source of inspiration for the theme, decor, venue, dresses, florals, etc.

STEP 2 – BUDGET

It’s time to start budgeting! Figure out how much you, your partner and your families have altogether, and what will be contributed. When that’s sorted, plan how much you want to spend on each area of the day. Start by picking your top 3 priorities and your lowest 3. This will help you to allocate your funds accordingly

STEP 3 – WEDDING PARTY

If you want to include a wedding party with bridesmaids, groomsmen, a page boy and flower girl, you need to pick who you want to include early on. This will keep everyone prepared from the get-go, and you’ll have an extra group of people to help you with the planning.

STEP 4 – GUEST LIST

This step is more flexible, as you won’t know how many guests you have until everyone has RSVPed. Until then, decide on whether you want a big wedding with as many family and friends as a venue can fit, or if you would prefer to have a small and intimate ceremony and celebration.

STEP 5 – DATE AND VENUE

Decide on a date and start looking for a venue. You want to secure a spot as soon as possible, especially during peak season. Use your journal to jot down ideas, themes and some inspiration. Go online to sites like Pinterest to find more ideas and create multiple boards for your various wedding themes.

STEP 6 – WEDDING PLANNER

Unless you’re planning to organise the wedding yourself, you’ll want to hire a wedding planner to help with the big day. It’s important to be prepared and know what you want at this stage so as to go forward with a set idea with a planner. This doesn’t mean you won’t change your mind, but it helps to have a good idea of what you’re going for.

STEP 7 – DRESS SEARCH

Start shopping/designing the dress. You will want to have plenty of time to alter and play around with your dress, so the sooner you find it the better.

STEP 8 – WEDDING OFFICIANT

Book your wedding officiant. This is not as easy as it seems, unless you have a family friend or church member that can assist. Make sure you book someone who understands your values and beliefs as a couple, so as to have a smooth ceremony.

STEP 9 – VENDORS

For the rest of the time, start looking for a photographer, DJ/band, catering, decor and any other vendors you will need for the big day. Start with one at a time, and make sure to do careful research as well as conduct meetings to ensure you get the best deals for the best quality.

STEP 10 – ENGAGEMENT PARTY

Last but not least, your engagement party. This is something you can completely organise on your own with your partner. It can be something that is intimate and small at home, or extravagant and at a high-class restaurant. Just make sure to get proper RSVPs and to book in advance.
