Alida & Regan

Alida Philip and Regan Peters gathered all the people and things they love for a bush wedding to remember.

HERE COMES THE BRIDE…

My husband and I met on our first day of varsity. We became close friends, but only in third year did it become more. We moved to London together for two years and then to Durban where we started our own business. Not one to rush into anything, Regan proposed seven years later on a beach on Ko Samui in Thailand.

We decided on the theme ‘All the things in life we love’. Our vision was to have a long weekend of happiness with all the people who mean the most to us, doing the things we love doing in a relaxed and beautiful setting. I wanted my wedding to be a unique, chilled and festive occasion that everyone would remember forever.

We got married at Penwarn Country Lodge in the heart of the Underberg. It ticked all my boxes: far away from the city, surrounded by the magnificent Drakensberg mountains, full of wild animals. It is heaven.

My wonderful family, magnificent friends and the team at Penwarn helped me plan everything from start to finish. And my mom didn’t leave my side throughout the whole process.

THE BIG DAY

I arrived at the ceremony in an antique carriage, drawn by two black Percheron stallions. A choir of ladies who work at Penwarn sang a Zulu wedding song as I walked down the aisle.

It rained most of the day, but as I said my vows, a ray of sunlight shone through, and a fish eagle cried as Regan put the ring on my finger. What an amazing moment!

At the reception, my 10-year-old nephew stood up and gave an impromptu speech (mic and all!), saying how much he loved us and was happy we were getting married. He had everyone in tears.

Our wedding favours were a soundtrack of the day, which included all the songs played at the reception. We danced until two in the morning, so I’m sure everyone enjoyed it!

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT

Whatever you do, have fun doing it… Don’t let the small things upset you. Surround yourself with people you love and you’ll have the happiest day of your life.

THE FINER DETAILS

The decor was very organic – natural colours and textures such as patterned cotton, wood, hay and string, and lots of heart shapes. We had rock roses, hydrangeas and orchids, bird cages, Tiffany chairs, Chinese lanterns and fairy lights decorating the Bedouin tent for the reception.

I wore an ivory strapless princess-style dress with folds held up by fabric roses and a lace insert. I loved it!

We served all our favourite food, including smoked trout the boys had caught the day before, spit braai, salad, samp and beans, krummelpap and sous, roast veggies, gravy and baked potatoes served buffet style.

We set up a dessert table with Magnum ice creams, Ferrero Rocher chocolates and sweeties, and our wedding ‘cake’ was a five-tiered cheese tower beautifully decorated by my brilliant chef sister.

Our first dance was to ‘Come What May’ from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack – my favourite song from my favourite movie.
