When it comes to the big day, the idea is to splurge, but that’s a not a reality for everyone. Nowadays, there is a huge emphasis on saving money, and couples are cutting costs wherever they can on their wedding budget.

We’ve put together 10 easy and practical steps for cost-saving when planning your wedding, take a look:

1. PLAN AHEAD

This may seem pretty obvious, but if you make sure that you know exactly what you want, as well as where and how to get it, you will have a much easier time budgeting and saving on certain costs.

2. GO OFF-SEASON

You wouldn’t believe how much cheaper it is to have your wedding off-season, from venue to decor hire and food, you can save easily by making your date at a time when the wedding scene is not booming.

3. CUT YOUR GUEST LIST

This tip is actually a tough one, because how do you even start to choose who to cut out of your big day? It’s difficult, but you also don’t want to pay a pretty penny for people who aren’t special or important for your big day. Start by making an age limit, such as no children under 13, or remove any guests who you’ve never even met or spoken to at all.

4. FLORAL PLANNING

If you have the time (and patience), attempt to grow your own flowers to save on fancy floral arrangements. Alternatively, try to pick flowers that are in season and are grown locally rather than expensive imported options.

5. SKIP THE LUXURY ITEMS

We know, we know. There are just so many beautiful decor pieces and special items that will make your day even more magical, but when it comes to cutting costs, spending on unnecessary details is at the top of the list. Keep things simple and make sure you know exactly what you want and need to avoid buying into over-priced items.

6. THE RULE OF 3

Pick 3 parts of your wedding which are most important to you, for example, the wedding dress, venue and food. Focus on these three things and maybe add a bit of extra spending for each on the budget. Then choose your 3 least important items, and plan your budget according to this list of most important to least important.

7. SAME TIME, SAME PLACE

When deciding on a venue, try to have your wedding ceremony and reception at the same venue to save on travel costs. This will also save you from having to stress about getting to the next place on time, and serves as a practical choice for getting ready, and getting guests in one place.

8. DIY ALL THE WAY

Don’t shy away from any opportunities to do things yourself. Get the family involved and write out your invites to make it more personal, or you can save on stationery and do the assembling yourself. As for decor, Pinterest is an exciting and imaginative space for DIY, crafting and more.

9. DECOR SAVES

Skip on the expensive and luxurious linen finishes and opt for a more rustic and natural effect with your reception decor. This will go well with an outdoor wedding or a natural theme. You can also include foliage and other natural elements to decorate which will save on costs.

10. TWO IN ONE

Incorporate your guests’ food in the favour in the form of a signature cocktail in a personalised glass, or with a delicious dessert in a jar. This way they will have something to enjoy at your wedding, and be able to take home the memory in the form of a sweet gift.
